Vegan Pesto Sauce

Who likes pesto sauce?

Last week, we have officially been vegan for 6 months! 6 months! WOW! Time literally flies. Its crazy to think that David and I haven’t had any animal products for 6 whole months. Wild man. Still blows my mind. We’ll be walking or driving somewhere and out of the blue either of us will say “We’re vegan”, because it it’s crazy to think that we are.

It’s seriously has been amazing. So many positive effects it has had on our lives, its awesome.

Since our journey of being vegan, we have inspired so many others to take on the lifestyle, which is also super awesome. It’s the exact reason we started this blog. We started it to help new vegans see the positivity of the change and how simple it really is. Simple recipes, good food, to show that its not as hard or difficult as it seems.

6 months in and we still look at backs of ingredients to learn what’s inside. We know what bread have milk inside and what things to order at restaurants. We are still learning new things every day. Creates an exciting time when meal prepping or shopping at the grocery store.

This past week I wanted a pasta dish that wasn’t the same old kind with marinara, I wanted some nice flavor. So, naturally went to the store grabbed some veggies, pasta, and pesto sauce. I didn’t look at the ingredients, because I honestly thought it was basil, oil, seasonings.

NOPE.

Thankfully, I looked at the back once I got home. There is cheese in pesto. I can’t be the only one who didn’t know this. OOPS! Another lesson learned in our journey being vegan.

Although I made my pesto for a pasta dish, pesto can be great on toast, pita, pita chips, bagels, etc. So good! Honestly, after having this homemade vegan pesto, I don’t think I’ll ever buy a store bought version ever!

Vegan Pesto Ingredients

  • Basil
  • EVOO
  • Garlic
  • Walnuts
  • Nutritional Yeast

How To Make Vegan Pesto:

I removed some of the longer thicker stems off my basil. It just made me feel better. LOL.

Place ready to go basil, garlic and walnuts into food processor. Pulse until all ingredients are mixed and finely chopped.

Next, turn processor on and begin to pour in EVOO. Take off top and move around ingredients from the very bottom.

Finally, add in the nutritional yeast, salt & pepper to taste. Continue food processor until fully mixed together.

Remove and enjoy with pasta, chips, anything!

Vegan Pesto Sauce

Add some flavor to your favorite pasta or pita bread with this addition!

Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Lightly Packed Fresh Basil
  • 4 Cloves Garlic
  • 1 2oz Nutritional Yeast
  • 1/4 Cup EVOO
  • 1/2 Cup Walnuts

Instructions

  1. Remove any large stems from basil.

  2. Place basil, walnuts, and garlic into food processor. Pulse until finely grated.

  3. Turn motor on and add in olive oil. Mix mixture around with utensil from bottom.

  4. Add in nutritional yeast, process until fully mixed. Enjoy!

Recipe Notes

Add more of any ingredient if you find it necessary.
